Education should impart such knowledge that leads to the holistic development of an individual—physically, mentally, intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
A profound message reflecting this vision is found in the Shaunaka Samhita of the Atharvaveda, Kanda 7, Sukta 89:
Meaning:
“O Agni! You are the embodiment of growth and illumination; may I too attain progress and enlightenment like you. You are the embodiment of brilliance; may you also bestow upon me brilliance and radiance.”
The Essence of the Mantra
These mantras invoke the blessings of water and fire for purity, health, longevity, radiance, strength, fame and spiritual advancement. The seeker prays that water may cleanse him of impurities and that Agni may bless him with brilliance, vitality, longevity, strength, prosperity and progress.
O Lord, You illuminate our inner being with Your radiant light and bless us with knowledge. Grant us such wisdom and brilliance that, having attained them, we may progress in every direction and contribute to the all-round development of society and the nation.
Our aspiration is not limited merely to the acquisition of knowledge. We seek comprehensive progress in every sphere of life. If we desire the holistic development of society and the nation, education must cultivate individuals of strong character and social sensitivity. Integrity, tolerance, mutual cooperation, compassion and harmony should become an integral part of their character.
If education is to become an instrument of social transformation, it cannot remain confined to mere literacy or academic knowledge. Our curriculum must provide an important place to activities that enable students to develop their physical, mental, intellectual, moral and social capabilities and connect them meaningfully with society and the nation.
“तन समर्पित, मन समर्पित और यह जीवन समर्पित । चाहता हूं देश की धरती तुझे कुछ और भी दूं। ”
When this spirit of dedication becomes an integral part of the atmosphere of our temples of education, many of the challenges before society will begin to find their own solutions.
